Introducing the Accelerated Program

The accelerated program is a program implemented by Restavek Freedom in order to continue with its mission to end child slavery in Haiti by helping children in restavek. The Accelerated Program debuted on October 2014 at one of our partner schools in Port-au-Prince. This program was created specifically for older children who are very behind in school, moving them through their lessons at a faster pace. Currently we have thirty children, ages 10 to 20, in the program. The living conditions of these children are very vulnerable; the families they live with don’t have the opportunity to respond to their primary needs, let alone pay for school. Restavek Freedom is helping these over-aged children receive a good education quickly, and to allow the children to take their first state exams soon.
Many children in this program have told us how much they love the accelerated program. They say that it is through this program they have all class materials, uniforms and the opportunity to continue their studies. Sara, one of the kids, explains that last year she didn’t have the chance to go to school because of her living conditions; she was always sad seeing children her age getting to go to school. But, by being a part of the Accelerated Program this year, she has found the opportunity to go to school and to catch up with her studies. She is so happy to be back in school and is proud to be part of the program.
By allowing children to make progress in their studies we are also contributing to the progress of Haitian society. I love that Restavek Freedom is working on the education of children living in restavek, and I am very happy to be a part of it!
