While our mission centers on freeing children from the restavek system in Haiti, the impact of this work goes much further. When these children have the ability to reclaim their freedom and access opportunities, our dedicated staff also experiences firsthand the transformational effects of their work; our community members witness the hope and resilience that freedom brings; and our global donors, who see their contributions driving real change. Every individual engaged with Restavek Freedom’s mission is a testament to how uplifting one community has the power to affect change worldwide. “I would like to express my deepest gratitude to Restavek Freedom for the Justice Training I have attended. The information and knowledge I have acquired make me see children and people differently – as a whole. Because of this training, my eyes were opened to a case I personally witnessed. A neighbor was mistreating a 10-year-old child living with her because she thought that the child stole her money. She was so angry with the child, and beat her because of it. When I saw this happening, I intervened and asked her to stop, but she only would if she had her money back. I took my own money and gave it to her to spare the child from any more abuse. I really hope this training will continue to make its way into people’s lives, the same way it did mine. ”

“I am a graduate from Justice Training, and I know a 16 year old girl who was mistreated by the woman she lives with. While the woman has her own children, the girl was the one who did all the chores in the house. Then, the woman’s boyfriend tried to rape the girl, and when she refused, he fought her. When I heard about this, I spoke with some of the neighbors, who decided to take the girl in until they could find her mother. Once they did, her mother came and got her the next day. As of now, she is still living with her parents. ”

“As a former restavek, I know what this system is about. Now as an adult, I feel there is a greater chance of ending this system because of things like Justice Training. Now, instead of thinking about taking my revenge out on these children for what people did to me when I was younger, I am standing up for them so that I can help them. In this system, you are not considered human. But Justice Training has enlightened my soul and helped me realize that all children have the same rights. I feel privileged to be a part of this great campaign of awareness. ”

“During our annual Summer Camp, Kervens stood up in front of the whole camp and apologized to Shelove, who is living as a restavek in Kerven’s house: “Shelove lives in my house. I used to mistreat her because everyone else did, including my mother. I never thought it was a bad thing. But now I see that it was, and everyone did an injustice to you. I will ask everyone in our home to live with and treat you well because you are human just like us. I want to thank [my Child Advocate], who encouraged my mother to let us come to this beautiful summer camp. And I want to thank Shelove for agreeing to come with me, and for also forgiving me, even though I used to do a lot of harm to you and your life. Thank you, Shelove.”
