What does it mean for a child to truly be free?
On June 14th, Haiti observed Day of the Child, a day dedicated to recognizing the rights, dignity, and potential of every child. While these observances are important, they also remind us that protecting children’s rights is not a one-day commitment. It is a responsibility that continues every day, in every community, and in every nation.
Every child deserves the opportunity to grow up in a safe environment, develop their talents, build healthy relationships, and pursue a hopeful future. Children have the right to learn, play, be heard, and live free from abuse, neglect, and exploitation. These rights are not privileges reserved for a few. They belong to every child.
When children’s rights are protected, children are able to thrive. Families become stronger. Communities become healthier. Entire nations benefit from the contributions of young people who have been given the opportunity to reach their full potential.
Across Haiti, children dream of becoming teachers, nurses, mechanics, entrepreneurs, artists, and community leaders. Like children everywhere, they carry unique gifts, talents, and aspirations.
Yet many face significant barriers that make those dreams more difficult to achieve.
Ongoing insecurity, displacement, economic hardship, and limited access to educational opportunities continue to impact children and families throughout the country. Some children struggle to attend school consistently. Others lack access to resources that support healthy development. Still others remain vulnerable to exploitation, including child domestic servitude.
These realities remind us that children’s rights are not simply ideals to celebrate. They require action to protect and uphold them.
At Restavek Freedom, we work alongside children, families, churches, schools, and community leaders to help create environments where children can thrive.
Through education, family strengthening, community development, leadership programs, advocacy, and child protection initiatives, we are helping address the conditions that place children at risk while creating pathways toward safety, opportunity, and freedom.
Our work is rooted in a simple belief: every child has inherent worth and immeasurable potential. Protecting children’s rights begins with recognizing that dignity. It means seeing children not as problems to solve, but as individuals with dreams, talents, and voices that matter.
As we reflect on Day of the Child, we are reminded that investing in children is one of the most important investments we can make. When children are protected, educated, and given opportunities to flourish, entire communities benefit.
Day of the Child may be marked on the calendar once a year, but the work of ensuring that every child is safe, valued, and free must continue every day.
What role can each of us play in helping create a world where every child has the opportunity to thrive?
