Since we began working in Haiti, we have learned that demonstrating a permanent and sustainable investment in Haitian communities and building lasting relationships with the people who live and work there are key to ending the exploitation of children in restavek and addressing the systemic issues behind the practice. In 2009, we opened our first Learning Center in Port Salut, which provides valuable services and economic empowerment to the community, while not competing with local schools. It also serves as a physical testament to Restavek Freedom’s long-term commitment to and investment in Haiti.
By observing existing gaps and actively listening to community members, we were able to identify the skills and resources they needed most to ensure the classes offered—ranging from literacy and computer skills to trades like plumbing and masonry—align with their aspirations and address real-world challenges.
Thanks to our Port Salut Learning Center, we have successfully reached more than 20,000 residents from all levels of society. It has allowed us to establish a reliable and permanent presence in the community, cultivate relationships, and build credibility with Haitian people and families—all of which are key to program success and to ending child slavery across the nation.
Equipping Haitians with valuable skills in plumbing, construction, electrical work, and masonry opens the door to sustainable employment opportunities. These trades empower individuals to provide for their families with dignity, breaking the cycle of poverty that often drives families to send their children into restavek. By fostering self-reliance and economic stability, these programs create pathways to a brighter future for entire communities.
Recognizing the critical role of technology and communication in today’s world, we provide computer and English classes designed to provide more economic pathways. These essential skills are in high demand across both the private and nonprofit sectors in Haiti, offering a direct pathway to meaningful employment. By mastering these areas, individuals can fast-track their journey to financial independence, empowering them to provide for their families and contribute to the growth and resilience of their communities.
Imagine the challenges of providing for a family without the ability to read or write. Literacy is the most requested skill at our Learning Centers, and for good reason—it’s a powerful tool that transforms lives. By gaining the ability to read, individuals can better navigate daily life, protect themselves, and seize new opportunities. Literacy not only gives them their confidence and independence but also makes them more competitive in the job market, paving the way for brighter futures for themselves and their families.
Adults gain hands-on training in advanced techniques for planting gardens and cultivating diverse crops and fruit-bearing tree seedlings. Once these trees mature, they can be replanted at home, where they provide dual benefits: a sustainable food source for their families and the potential to generate extra income through the sale of produce and fruit. Additionally, these trees play a crucial environmental role, as their roots stabilize topsoil and improve water filtration, contributing to the health of the local ecosystem. This program not only supports families’ immediate needs but also promotes long-term agricultural and environmental resilience.
